Thorney Toll Anniversary
As reported in the "Wisbech Advertiser
Wednesday 20th June 1874
A very successful anniversary has just been
held in connexion with the new School and Mission Church at
Thorney Toll, in the parish of Guyhirn with Rings End. The good
work was completed about a year since, and has proved a great
success, consequently this first anniversary was a most cheering
one.
The school children, about 80 in number,
were treated with an excellent tea, and afterwards greatly
enjoyed the sports provided for them. At 5 o'clock a public tea
was provided in Mr Wadsley's barn, kindly lent for the occasion.
The trays were given and an excellent provision made by some
friends in the district, and others interested in the work at
Thorney Toll. Great praise is due to all who took part in this
social gathering for the hearty spirit which they manifested.
At 7.30 a large congregation assembled in
the Mission Church, when some appropriate hymns were sung by the
choir, and addresses delivered by the Revs Wm Carpenter, Joshua
Cantley, R H Warner, and Lewis Sanders. The proceeds of the tea
realized nearly seven pounds, to which over three pounds more
were contributed by several friends in the district, who could
not conveniently provide trays.
The total sum realized from the tea,
collections, etc., was about sixteen pounds, which will be
applied towards the liquidation of a small debt of thirty-five
pounds which still remained on the building.
